Infrastructures

One of the major focuses of the Government for the development of digital technology in Côte d'Ivoire is the expansion of coverage across the territory and among the population, as well as the development of high-speed networks, which particularly involves quality infrastructure.

  • Mobile Network Coverage

Significant investments have been made by operators (ORANGE CI, MTN CI, and MOOV AFRICA CI) to extend mobile network coverage. As of December 31, 2022, approximately 92% of localities and 97% of the country's population are covered by the mobile phone network. The 4G network covers about 63% of localities, allowing 91% of the population to access high-speed mobile internet. The map below shows the 4G coverage areas of the different operators.

  • National Fiber Optic Network

In order to connect all regions of the country, as well as link neighboring countries, the Government has initiated and implemented the National High-Speed Network Project consisting of 7,000 km of fiber optic cable. To date, approximately 2,000 km of fiber optic cable has been constructed by the State. This project will continue as part of the implementation of the National Development Plan (PND) 2021-2025.

In addition to the national high-speed network project led by the Government, private telecommunications operators are deploying their broadband networks. By the end of 2022, there are over 22,000 km of fiber optic cable owned by operators and service providers, including ORANGE, MTN, MOOV, and AWALE.

  • International Connectivity

With the ultimate goal of reducing the retail price of the internet for the benefit of the population and all professionals, the Government has encouraged significant investments by private operators with the landing of two (02) new submarine cables. Thus, to date, Côte d'Ivoire is served by five (05) international submarine cables (SAT3, ACE, WACS, MAINONE, and the Morocco Telecom West Africa cable), significantly improving competition in the wholesale international capacity market. This market refers to all services provided by players with a landing point for submarine cables to other operators or internet service providers. In 2022, the total equipped international bandwidth capacity is approximately 850 Gbit/s, of which more than 500 Gbit/s is utilized.
